I Am Empowered Hot Chocolate

Oh this one will tickle and tantalize those taste buds - leaving you with happy feet all the way down to the very last drop!


  • 2 Tbs raw cocoa powder
  • 1 Tbs maca powder
  • 1 Tbs goji berries
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  • 2 dates (pits removed)
  • 1/4 cup cashews
  • dash or two of cayenne pepper (optional but a nice kick of heat, omit for kids)


  • Start by placing the dates and goji berries in the bottom of a measuring cup and covering with hot water to soak and soften while you toss the other ingredients in the blender.
  • Add the cocoa, maca, honey, cashews and cayenne (if using) to the blender.
  • Now add the soft dates and goji berries to the blender.
  • Add more hot water or a yummy nut milk to the remaining soak water until you get 8 ounces of liquid. I typically have fresh made brazil, coconut or almond milk on hand to make it extremely creamy, but hot water is delicious as well. Thanks to the cashews it's creamy either way.
  • If you're using a vita-mix you can just blend until warm. If you're mixing in a traditional blender then transfer the chocolate to a small pan and gently heat over the stove. It should be warm, not hot, to retain the precious vitamins, minerals and enzymes. If it scalds your finger it's too hot.


This makes enough to fill one large starbucks coffee cup...clearly an observation based on experience :)

Confession: when I first concocted this, I started sneaking down to the kitchen before my kids were up so I could have it for breakfast - I made it every morning for 5 days straight.. And I'm typically a green juice and water kind of girl :)

The best part about this recipe - aside from the taste of course :) - is that it's full of superfoods that will rev up your body and help to get your systems functioning optimally. David Wolfe, big nutrition guru among raw foodies, has a fantastic book called Superfoods that discusses the health benefits of maca, goji, cocoa, raw honey, and many other strange and wonderful delights. All of which can be found at your local Whole Foods :)

Maca, for instance, is a root vegetable and comes from the broccoli, cabbage, radish plant family. It's known for its energy boosting properties as well as it's magical super powers in the bedroom..fertility, libido, PMS, and even menopausal symptoms.

The health benefits of cocoa are a bit more controversial in the holistic health world, but consuming it in it's raw, unrefined form is certainly better than the processed and refined version. Goji berries are delicious little berries that many health experts recommend consuming daily due to their proven ability to help prevent damage to the skin, eyes, pancreas, and other organs and tissues, and to reduce pain and inflammation in arthritis. They pack a pretty powerful punch!

And lastly, according to Natural News as well as many other experts, raw honey has a long list of beneficial functions. Raw honey increases calcium absorption; can increase hemoglobin count and treat or prevent anemia caused by nutritional factors; can help arthritic joints, when combined with apple cider vinegar; fights colds and respiratory infections of all kinds; can help to boost gastrointestinal ulcer healing; works as a natural and gentle laxative; aids constipation, allergies and obesity; provides an array of vitamins and minerals; and supplies instant energy without the insulin surge caused by white sugar. Many have found raw honey helpful for its positive effects against allergies and hay fever, and one or two teaspoons last thing at night can help with insomnia. As an antiseptic, honey is also a drawing agent for poisons from bites or stings or infected wounds, and has outperformed antibiotics in treatments for stomach ulcerations, gangrene, surgical wound infections, surgical incisions and the protection of skin grafts, corneas, blood vessels and bones during storage and shipment.
